NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- In just the first 19 days of December, Lowcountry Red Cross has assisted 64 people affected by house fires. That's why nonprofit organizations like Martha's Closet are a necessity.

"They've lost everything," said Kristina Litzenberger, as she reflected on the desperation of fire victims.

Martha's Closet helps fire victims get back on their feet. The organization helped victims of the Delta Oaks Apartment fire on Nov. 26, where several young families were left homeless.

"It was really sad to hear some of them had gone shopping just that black Friday, just several days before. And, they had these items in the closets and put away so they could go ahead and wrap them for their children," said Litzenberger. "They didn't even have the opportunity to wrap them."

In the midst of the holiday season, Litzenberger and her volunteers have a simple plea.

"If you have anything that would help these families they are truly in need," said Nora Ray, a Martha's Closet volunteer. "They came through this with no fault of their own."

"That's why we're here. We're kind of a hub for the community to bring in their donations and for us to give them back out to those in need," Litzenberger said.

Martha's Closet is primarily in need of furniture, household goods and kitchenware.
