SC councilman to give update on lead cleanup

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A Columbia city councilman is giving an update on efforts to clean up lead contamination in a downtown neighborhood.

Councilman Moe Baddourah is hosting a public meeting on Thursday at the Edisto Discovery Park and Neighborhood Center.

Earlier this year, state environmental officials called the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency after identifying elevated lead and arsenic levels in the soil of several yards in a neighborhood near downtown.

Officials have said a fertilizer plant that closed in the late 1930s is likely the source of the pollution.
