CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Charleston Water Service confirmed that a water main has broken at Ashley Crossing Lane.

A CWS customer service representative tells us the 24-inch main break is on a sidewalk near the Berkshires at the Ashley River apartment complex.

Charleston police are working to direct traffic in the area.

CWS crews are working to find valves to shut down the water.

CWS spokesperson Jenny Craft said a worker told her "some road repairs" would be necessary, but she's not sure the extent of the damage.

She said there probably will be some customers without water, but repairs are typically made within hours.

We'll update this story as more information becomes available.
