CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - The Charleston County Environmental Management Department is asking you to lessen your environmental footprint this holiday season.
Christmas trees can be recycled this year. Some municipalities will pick them up curbside and take them to the Bees Ferry Landing Compost Facility to be ground and composted.
Residents can drop off a tree at the Bees Ferry Landfill from Jan. 2-9 and will receive a free bag of compost.
All wrapping paper, gift wrap and cardboard can also be recycled through the curbside-pickup program.
"Recycling your tree not only saves valuable landfill space, but supports Charleston County's 40 percent recycling goal," said Christina Moskos, the recycling coordinator.
The recycling pickup schedule will be pushed back one day for the next week. For example, if your regular scheduled recycle pickup day is Tuesday, it will be picked up on Wednesday next week.
The Bees Ferry Landfill will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 1.
