Charleston gears up for New Year's celebrations downtown
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- To celebrate 2013, there are plenty of events planned around the Lowcountry, including Happy New Year, Charleston! at Marion Square.
The event started Monday afternoon and lasts until 10:30 p.m.
Some of the night's shows include performances by the Mt. Zion Spiritual Singers, the Charleston Symphony Brass Ensemble and the Missing Links will entertain the crowd with a break dancing routine.
The East Coast Party Band headlines the musical acts and takes the stage at 8:30 p.m.
Children can be entertained with a magic show, jump castles and face painters.
"I think that's what is great about it because it feels safe bringing your kids down. You can do it early, with little kids in mind. You can do it late for the older ones. I just like the openness of it," said parent Margaret Artlip.
There are also a variety of food vendors so visitors can get anything from funnel cakes to barbecue to macaroni and cheese.
Evangelist Franklin Graham prayed on a sidewalk outside the Pentagon Thursday after his invitation to a prayer service inside was withdrawn because of comments that insulted people of other religions. More>>
