Confusion leads to 2 Polar Bear Plunges to start 2013

Posted: Updated:

SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) - The 19th annual Polar Bear Plunge on Sullivan's Island featured two bone-chilling dips into the Atlantic this year.

Due to a bit of confusion over the start time, one group jumped in at 1 p.m. and another group at 2 p.m.

The annual run that attracts thousands dressed up in a variety of costumes is hosted by Dunleavy's Pub and benefits the Special Olympics.

For the Kutcher family, New Year's Day this year wasn't about beginnings.  The family took the plunge to honor the memory of a loved one, Joe Kutcher, a Wando High School teacher who recently died from cancer.

"My dad was so special to me. I'm doing this for him to raise money and for Special Olympics too," said Joe Kutcher's daughter, Trista.  "It was so much fun and I miss him a lot."
