Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) -- South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Wednesday signed an executive order scheduling a special election to fill Rep. Tim Scott's seat.

Scott's seat became vacant when Haley appointed him to fill Sen. Jim DeMint's seat. DeMint announced he was resigning from the Senate to lead conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation.

Filing for Scott's open seat begins Jan. 18 at noon and ends 10 days later. The GOP will hold a party primary on March 19. A primary runoff will be held April 2 if it's needed.

The general special election for Scott's seat will be held May 7.
