NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The South Carolina Stingrays announced Wednesday that goaltender Ryan Zapolski has been named the Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for Dec. 24-30.
Zapolski, 26, recorded two shutouts in both appearances last week, stopping 26 shots in a 4-0 victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators Friday night and turned in a 23-save performance in a 3-0 win against the Wheeling Nailers Saturday evening. The Erie, Pennsylvania, native leads the ECHL with a 1.65 goals-against average and .939 save percentage and is tied for the lead with three shutouts. Zapolski also claimed the weekly award earlier this season for the week ending Dec. 2.
In 32 career ECHL games with South Carolina,Gwinnett,Toledo and Kalamazoo, Zapolski posted an overall record of 20-9-1 with five shutouts, a 2.00 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage. Prior to turning pro, Zapolski skated for four seasons at Mercyhurst College appearing in 109 games going 48-43-11 with eight shutouts, a 2.77 goals-against average and a save percentage of .920.
The Stingrays are on the road Friday, Jan. 4 and Saturday, Jan. 5 against the Gwinnett Gladiators and Greenville Road Warriors at 7:35 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. before returning home on Sunday, Jan. 6 to face the Everblades at 3:05 p.m. on Kid's Day at the North Charleston Coliseum.
