CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- It's a big day for Lowcountry native Tim Scott. At noon on Thursday, the U.S. Representative will be sworn into the 113th Congress as a U.S. Senator.

"No one could have said 20 years ago or 30 years ago that I would have an opportunity like I had today," Tim Scott said. "It just speaks to the amazing strength of the American dream. I am excited about the opportunity; I certainly am a little nervous and I'm going to focus on learning the system in the senate and coming home every weekend that I possibly can."

Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Scott on Dec. 17 to fill the U.S. Senate seat of retiring Sen. Jim DeMint.

"What we haven't had or seen is a conversation on limiting the size of government so that we can increase the size of the family paycheck and I'm going to work on that as a primary focus," Scott said. "There is just no way to grow the economy when you take the money out of the family paychecks and put it in the hands of the government. We have to reverse that feeling in Washington that the most important city in America is Washington D.C."

Scott will be the first-ever African-American senator from the state of South Carolina and the first from the South since 1881.

"I think the symbolic nature of my being in the Senate is better framed by saying thank God I live in an amazing state and we continue to evolve and we continue to impress because our people are amazing," Scott said.

Scott will serve in the U.S. Senate until 2014 when he will then have to run for re-election to fill the remaining two years of DeMint's Senate term.
