2 Lowcountry areas get block grants for improvements

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) -- Two Lowcountry communities are on a list to receive block grant funding from the state to revitalize areas.

On the list of nearly a dozen communities receiving grants are Colleton County, which will receive more than $285,000 to demolish blighted property, and the city of Hanahan, which will receive $25,000 for its neighborhood revitalization plan.

In all, more than $3.4 million in community development block grant funds will be distributed by the Department of Commerce.

"The CDBG program consistently has a positive impact on communities across our state that need resources for community development, providing a stronger infrastructure in South Carolina for improving residents' quality of life, and creating a more competitive environment for bringing jobs and investment," said Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt.

Selected through a statewide competitive process, communities receiving CDBG funding are required to provide at least 10 percent matching funds. To secure grant funding, communities must demonstrate how they will use grant funds to ensure healthy and safe neighborhoods.

The Department of Commerce said Thursday that 77 percent of the funds will directly benefit low- and moderate- income communities.
