WASHINGTON (WCIV) -- They're the calls that always seem to come at the worst times and make you consider throwing your phone or going without a phone at all.
But the Federal Trade Commission is wanting Americans to channel that rage constructively -- and the agency is offering a cash reward to the person who solves the robocall problem.
The FTC is running a contest to stop robocalls on landline and cellphones. The winning submissions will make someone $50,000 richer and earn them a ticket to Washington, D.C., to present the solution to FTC leadership.
"We think this will be an effective approach in the case of robocalls because the winner of our challenge will become a national hero," said David Vladeck, the Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection.
So far, submissions include a 24-hour hotline to report robocalls and blacklists to block repeat offenders.
Even though the FTC has a "Do Not Call List," robocalls still get through because a company is allowed to call any of their customers who have purchased anything from them in the last 18 months.
The deadline is Jan. 17 and the winner will be announced on April 15.
