CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Neighborhood and conservation groups are appealing state regulators' permit for a $35 million cruise passenger terminal in Charleston.
The Post and Courier reports Friday the groups want the Department of Health and Environmental Control to rescind the permit issued last month that allows pilings to be drilled into the Cooper River for the terminal planned for an old warehouse.
The controversy over the terminal has already sparked lawsuits in state and federal court.
If the permit is not rescinded, the neighborhood groups want the State Ports Authority to consider other terminal locations require that cruise ships use power from the shore instead of running their engines when in port.
The authority says it's reviewing the appeal. The DHEC board has two months to consider the issue.
