SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- Construction on Sullivan's Island Elementary school is set to begin. The school has been in the middle of a year of heated debates and a lawsuit.

Members of the Charleston County School District Board of Trustees voted in October to break ground on the new school. That groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Monday, January 7 at 11 a.m.

Attending the groundbreaking ceremony will be SIES Principal Susan R. King and Superintendent for Charleston County Schools, Dr. Nancy McGinley. A performance from the school's student singers will take place at the event as well.

The proposed new school will replace the one that has already been torn down. The new school will be about twice the size of the former school building.

Last year, 15 percent of voters on Sullivan's Island signed a petition asking for the issue to be put to a vote on the November ballot. That petition was denied by town council.

Members of a group called "Islanders for a smaller school" filed a lawsuit against town council in the South Carolina circuit court.
