CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – School security will be at the forefront of discussion at Charleston County and Dorchester District 2 school board meetings Monday night.
CCSD will hear from Director of Security William Scott at Monday's meeting. They are also expected to take action on the placement of police in elementary schools in North Charleston. The meeting agendas do not say if the topic of putting police in schools district-wide will be discussed.
The security debate comes at a time when two recent gun incidents occurred at Lowcountry schools. Last Friday, a West Ashley High School student was arrested after police found a pistol and two rounds of ammunition in his pocket.
The sixteen-year-old student was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, unlawful carrying of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Deputies say there is no indication the student planned to commit violent acts on campus. The student has been recommended for expulsion according to school officials.
Another weapon was found in school on Friday, this time a BB pistol. Charleston Police say a 14-year-old was arrested for bringing the gun to Charleston Development Academy. Reports say another student say the 14-year-old with the gun on campus and told school officials who called police. This student also faces charges.
