Tulsa Zoo's 600-Pound Resident Newest New York Resident

Posted: Updated:

One of the Tulsa Zoo's largest residents had his last day in Green Country Wednesday with cameras and visitors sending him off.

Zoo employees had a send-off party for Rocket the Aldabra Tortoise Wednesday morning. The 600 pound reptile will be traveling to New York where he will call the Bronx Zoo his new home.

Rocket arrived in Tulsa back in 2009 after being moved from a zoo in Wichita while they made changes to their exhibits.

According to the Tulsa Zoo's release, once he gets settled in New York, Rocket will breed with other tortoises to help conserve the species.

The Tulsa Zoo has one of the most successful tortoise breeding programs in North America, according to the release.
