SC observing human trafficking awareness month

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina officials are observing National Human Trafficking Awareness month with an event at the Statehouse.

Attorney General Alan Wilson says South Carolinians need to be aware of the problem and join efforts to end it.

Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell will start Tuesday's event by reading Gov. Nikki Haley's proclamation. Other scheduled speakers include Wilson, Solicitor Duffie Stone, state Sen. Brad Hutto of Orangeburg and state Rep. Nelson Hardwick of Surfside Beach.

The observance will end at noon with a ringing of bells.

The Legislature passed a measure last year intended to strengthen South Carolina's anti-human-trafficking laws.

The new law created a human trafficking task force that's led by Wilson. The Republican attorney general says the group is working on a plan for combating the issue.
