SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- In a press release Tuesday, former Dorchester County Sheriff Ray Nash said he'd be leaving his current post in Afghanistan to run for congress.
"Due to the recent attacks on our Constitutional freedoms, I was gravely concerned that I would no longer recognize my country upon my return," said Nash. "Then I realized I had a clear opportunity to do something about it by running for Congress."
Nash is currently serving as the Criminal Justice Adviser for the US Embassy in Kabul. The release said he would be returning to the Lowcountry to begin his campaign.
"I am uniquely qualified to represent the citizens of the First District due to my 34 years in the law enforcement profession, over 20 years of executive leadership, my service as an elected Sheriff for 12 years, and my foreign service experience here in Afghanistan," he said. "I've been preserving, protecting, and defending the Constitution for over three decades. Now I have a chance to do it from a different perspective. I just need to wrap up a few things here, then I'll be home in a few days!"
While Nash's website, NashForCongress.com isn't up and running yet, he made an official announcement on his Facebook page: "This is going to blow everyone away. But I just sent this out to all Lowcountry media outlets. The race is on...!"
Nash's stint as sheriff wasn't without controversy. An audit of the Dorchester County Detention Center found that over $50 thousand had been embezzled by a longtime employee under Nash's watch. That same year an inmate escaped from custody twice sparking an internal investigation into prison security. Nash retired in 2009 after 12 years of service.
