MCCLELLANVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) – A Lowcountry fishing community may be small, but what they raised for Hurricane Sandy victims will certainly make a splash.
Folks in McClellanville never thought they'd have the opportunity to pay it forward to a northeast community who helped them during Hugo.
"Having been through a hurricane disaster ourselves, we learned that cash donations are the easiest thing to use to help people," town administrator Mary Duke said.
Duke says they chose to set up a fund for residents of Toms River, New Jersey. Donations came in from all over the Lowcountry, and as far as California.
The town, however, never thought they would get an anonymous check for $100,000.
Duke says she didn't believe it when she first laid eyes on the amount.
"I said, well boy didn't they make a mistake," she said with a laugh.
With the extra cash, McClellanville was able to send a check for $114,000 before Christmas.
The town has not heard from the folks in Toms River, but Duke says she knows the money will be put to good use.
