CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP/WCIV) - The filing period has not opened but South Carolina's 1st District congressional race is getting several more candidates.
State Sen. Larry Grooms is announcing Thursday that he will be run for the GOP nomination in the district along the state's south coast.
"Washington is threatening our jobs, our families and our way of life. Now more than ever we need a strong, principled conservative who will fight against Washington's high taxes, endless debt, and constant attacks on our freedom. I have fought for you in the South Carolina Senate. You know where I stand. You know I will fight for you in Washington," Grooms said in a statement Thursday.
Charleston County School Board member Elizabeth Moffly is also announcing for the GOP nomination. Ten candidates have already said they're getting into the contest.
Teddy Turner, the son of media magnate Ted Turner, holds a reception Thursday to kick off his campaign. Former Gov. Mark Sanford announced his candidacy Wednesday.
Democratic candidate Bobbie Rose also announced her candidacy on her official Facebook page, adding that she believed other Democratic candidates could file as well.
Filing opens Friday at noon for the seat left vacant when Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Rep. Tim Scott to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the resignation of Jim DeMint.
