Man who faked death to avoid child porn charges sentenced

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) -- The man who staged his own death off the coast of South Carolina to escape child pornography charges was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison and lifetime probation.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, 60-year-old Harvey Cox of Florence was being investigated on child porn charges when his boat was found adrift at sea in 2011 with his wallet and car keys inside. Officials said his truck was left at the dock.

Investigators said Cox took a cab back to his home and used another car to leave the state to avoid the charges he faced. The U.S. Marshal Service, with assistance from state authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Service, began a fugitive investigation to locate Cox and he was arrested in Silver Springs, Fla., on March 3, 2011.

During a search of Cox's home and business, authorities found Polaroid cameras with images of underage children. Officials were able to use the photos to identify the victims, which revealed the sex abuse started when the child was 12 years old and lasted several years.
