SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- One local gun shop credits the threat of a federal ban on assault rifles for their increase in sales. So much so, many first time shooters, especially women, are eager to learn.

ATP Gun Shop and Range offers shooting classes specifically for women. The event is called Girls Night Out.

"We teach them how to use, shoot 22 caliber pistol/revolver and a semi-automatic," said Marian Wagers, a ‘Girls' Night Out' instructor. "We start with how to load it, how to aim, how to shoot, unload it and just everything they need to know."

After the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, Wagers says attendance for Girls Night Out has doubled in size. She says more mothers have been interested in the program.

"Most people are afraid that they are going to ban the assault rifles. Everybody seems to want to get hold to one, where they'll have one if they do ban them."

Although the talk of the ban has been good for business, it only fuels Wagers' personal fears.

"I don't think its going to make much difference in the violence," she said. "The bad people are going to get hold of them one way or the other and the good people will be the ones that will not have the assault rifles for protection."

ATP Gun Shop and Range has Girls Night Out every Tuesday and Thursday night. Wagers says no one is turned away.

" I think every lady should learn how to shoot a gun."
