CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Tuesday marks the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. The 7-2 vote legalized abortion in America, and it's a decision that still draws debate and controversy.

On Tuesday, Bishop Robert Guglielmone of the Diocese of Charleston is holding a special mass with abortion at its core. The mass is meant to honor the sanctity of human life and is being held at 12:05 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

Bishop Guglielmone is calling it a day of prayer for the church.

"To commemorate this date we are asking folks from the Diocese to come together and pray for those who have been aborted, 54 million since 1973," Bishop Robert Guglielmone said. "And to pray for those who have struggled for the issue of abortion and those women who have given up children and struggled with it and for all those involved in it."

The service will focus on praying for the sanctity of human life, elimination of abortion, and for the healing of those affected by abortion. The Bishop says one of the missions of the church is to fully restore the legal protection of unborn children.

The church encourages people to write to legislators, lobby to Congress, and to truly educate themselves on this difficult issue.

"One of the biggest issues is to get people to really recognize what is really happening. For some people it is a word, it doesn't touch the heart, and we've seen the number of abortions decrease especially here in South Carolina radically," Bishop Guglielmone said. "We think part of that is because we are constantly trying to raise consciousness and awareness to what a difficult situation this is."

The Catholic Church will be participating in the national march to overturn Roe v. Wade this Friday in Washington D.C.
