Man accidentally shot in chest at Walterboro home

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) -- Walterboro police responded to a home on State Street around 2:30 p.m. Saturday for reports of a shooting.

According to police reports, they found the victim, 20-year-old Devany Beckett, on his back in the rear of the apartment with a wound in his upper chest. They also found 2-year-old William Thibodeau standing by his car with a shotgun on the ground nearby.

Police report that the victim's girlfriend tried to stop the bleeding while Thibodeau told them that the shooting was a "weapon handling accident."

Beckett was taken to Colleton Medical Center. His condition is unknown.

Thibodeau is charged with discharging a firearm within city limits.
