Sedgefield Intermediate principal charged with domestic violence
BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- The principal of a Berkeley County school was placed on administrative leave after being charged with domestic violence last month.
According to a police report from Hanahan, officers were sent to the Willows Apartments in response to an assault. When they arrived, they found a woman who said her ex-boyfriend had forced his way into her home and ransacked it looking for a watch.
The victim told officers that her ex-boyfriend, who she identified as Sedgefield Intermediate School Principal Clarence Hawkins, knocked on her door around 3 a.m. She said she asked why he was there to which he responded that he was there to collect his watch, police reported.
The victim said she did not have the watch. Then Hawkins allegedly pushed his way inside, shoved her in the chest and called her a bitch, the report states. The victim started yelling for someone to call 911. She told officers she could not get to her cellphone because Hawkins was throwing things around her apartment looking for a watch.
The victim said Hawkins ran when she called 911.
The victim said she did not want EMS to check her out, but that she did want to press charges against Hawkins.
Hawkins was arrested and charged with criminal domestic violence and placed in the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.
The school system released the following statement about the arrest:
"Berkeley County School District holds our employees to the highest level of professional excellence. As soon as the district learned of the alleged incident -- reported off of school grounds and not during school hours -- and in compliance with District policy, the employee involved was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Please note that we may not disclose other specifics about the employees employment as investigations regarding personnel matters are protected by privacy rights. Mr. Hawkins has not been back at school since before the alleged incident."
