MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Three women were arrested after a shoplifting incident at Mount Pleasant Towne Centre led to a hit-and-run involving a police officer, a chase into North Charleston and a crash into a garage.
Police have not released the identities of the women.
According to Mount Pleasant Police Department spokesperson Stan Gragg, a Mount Pleasant police officer was investigating multiple thefts from several stores.
"The suspects had been described as three black females driving a silver vehicle," said Gragg. "The officer approached three subjects fitting the description provided by store employees and after a brief encounter the suspects jumped into their vehicle and intentionally struck the officer and fled the scene."
Gragg said the car was located on Coleman Boulevard and when police tried to stop them, a chase started.
That chase ended when the suspects crashed their car into someone's garage on Morningside Drive in North Charleston.
"North Charleston officers assisted in the pursuit when it entered the city via 526," said North Charleston Police Department spokesperson Spencer Pryor. "The suspect vehicle exited on Dorchester Road at Kent Street and struck a vehicle before continuing on and crashing on Morningside (Drive)."
Charleston County Sheriff's Office and North Charleston Police Department assisted in the chase and the three women were arrested.
The officer was transported to Medical University Hospital. Officials with Charleston County EMS said the officer was in "very stable" condition.
The scene at the Towne Centre was cleared around 3:15 p.m.
