SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Dorchester County officials have announced a ceremonial ground breaking for the Delmar Highway widening project.

The ceremony will be held at Ashley Ridge High School Jan. 28 at 10 a.m.

In an announcement Thursday, DD2 Public Information Officer Pat Raynor said while Hwy 165 has worked so far in the "once rural part of Dorchester County," the "exploding residential growth" coupled with the opening of Ashley Ridge made the widening necessary.

"In addition, sports events and extracurricular activities at Ashley Ridge High bring large numbers of the public to the school," said Raynor.

Funding for the project came from a $13 million award from the State Infrastructure Bank.

South Carolina-based engineering firm, Dennis Corporation, has been selected to design the road improvements.  Construction is expected to begin in late 2013.
