Oral Roberts University played their most complete game of the season to date on Thursday night, a 77-48 pasting of Southland Conference-leading Lamar University at the Mabee Center. Four Golden Eagles scored in double-figures in the win.
Freshman Taylor Cooper led the way on the score sheet, with a career-high 20 points, while Sarah Shelton added her first career double-double, with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Seniors got in on the act as well, with Jaci Bigham and Kevi Luper tallying 13 points each. Bigham added seven assists.
The ORU defense was on point, holding Lamar (12-5, 5-2 Southland Conference) to 28.8% shooting. The Golden Eagles held Kalis Loyd, who entered the game averaging a league-best 18.8 points per game, to just 11 points. Dominique Edwards added 11 for the Lady Cardinals.
ORU's first success of the night came early in the first half. After falling into a 9-4 hole, The Golden Eagles scored 19 consecutive points, capped by a Christian Key fast break jumper, to take a 23-9 lead with 9:53 left in the half. Bigham assisted on four of ORU's eight baskets during the run.
The Golden Eagles (8-9, 5-2 Southland Conference) continued to stretch their lead, with Luper serving as the catalyst. The senior scored seven points as part of a 9-0 run, including her first three-point basket since January 3, to help the home side build a 35-15 lead with 4:24 left in the half.
ORU continued to surge forward in the half's closing stages. The Golden Eagles closed on a 7-2 run, taking a 44-21 lead into the halftime locker room.
Three Golden Eagles scored in double-figures in the opening half, with Shelton tallying 12 points, Luper scoring 11 and Cooper adding 10.
The lead kept growing for Misti Cussen's team. A layup from Shelton gave the Golden Eagles their first 30-point lead, at 59-29, with 12:16 on the clock.
ORU's largest lead of the night came with 3:54 left, as Krisztina Velkey drained a three-ball to make the score 77-43.
ORU hit 10-of-22 (45.5%) three-point attempts and tied a season-high with 21 assists. The 10 made three-pointers was also season high.
With the win, ORU is now 4-4 all-time against Lamar.
The win is the largest conference victory for the Golden Eagles since a 102-62 win over former Summit League rival IPFW on January 23, 2012.
ORU continues their four-game home stand on Saturday, January 26 when they host McNeese State. Tipoff at the Mabee Center is scheduled for 5 pm CT
