Imprisonment in war subject of SC symposium

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP/WCIV) -- A symposium scheduled for the USS Yorktown in Charleston Harbor is focusing on prisoners of war.

Speakers slated for Friday's event are set to discuss being prisoners in conflicts from World War II to Vietnam. There will also be a survivor of the Holocaust.

Mary Murakami will discuss her experiences when she was forced to move into an internment camp in the Arizona desert during World War II.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. and runs until noon. It is free to the public.

"We are honored to present such a distinguished panel of speakers," said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette. "Each panelist persevered despite unfathomable hardships and emerged a stronger person – we can all learn a valuable lesson from their tenacity."
