Rose drops out of District 1 race on last day to file

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV/AP) -- Bobbie Rose's race for the 1st Congressional District seat left open by Tim Scott was short-lived. Rose announced Monday afternoon she was dropping her bid.

Rose said that opportunities in the private sector pulled her away from the race.

"While I don't regret one minute of that campaign, I feel I should now spend my time working to improve our district, our state and our country in other ways," she said.

At this point, there are 16 Republican and 3 Democratic candidates in the race.

Four sitting state lawmakers and former Gov. Mark Sanford, who is trying to make a political comeback, are among the Republicans seeking the seat.

The Democrats include Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, the sister of comedian and Charleston native Stephen Colbert.

The party primaries are March 19.
