CHARLESTON, S.C. (CIT/WCIV) - The Citadel School of Engineering received a Google Community Grant of $14,500 from the Google Inc. Charitable Giving Fund at Tides Foundation.
Officials at the school said the Google Community Grant will be used to support various programs during Engineering Week, set for Feb. 16-233.
Each year, The Citadel hosts an engineering event that serves as an outreach program for primary school students as well as the general public. This event offers an opportunity for future engineers to gain a deeper understanding of the profession and for the community to come to The Citadel and learn about engineering.
"We are fortunate to work with Google to encourage the current and future engineers of our society," said Army Col. Ron Welch (ret.), dean of the School of Engineering at The Citadel. "Google is an exceptional corporate leader in our community, and we look forward to our continued partnership."
The school said funding will support three fundamental project areas:
- Community outreach during Engineering Week. Competitions for students include: craft stick bridge, Lego golf robotics, Lego baseball robotics, demonstrations, and presentations of electrical and computer engineering inventions.
- Support for the Autonomous Vehicle project for the design and construction of an intelligent vehicle. Based on product realization, this project stands at the cutting edge of engineering education, offering an experience that is multidisciplinary, theory based, hands on, team implemented, and outcome assessed.
- Leadership and education programs for cadets. Citadel students participate in programs that teach mentoring skills, develop leadership, and encourage the participation of women in engineering.
The Citadel School of Engineering offers civil, environmental and electrical engineering degrees.
"We believe part of our responsibility is to make positive contributions to the communities in which we live and work," said Eric Wages, Google operations manager at the Berkeley County data center. "South Carolina has given a lot to Google, and we want to support the people who have allowed our company to be so successful."
The Google Community Grant comes from the Google Inc. Charitable Giving Fund at Tides Foundation, which offers donor-advised funds, as well as professional philanthropic advice.
