NRC meeting set to discuss projects at Oconee

Posted: Updated:

SENECA, S.C. (AP) -- Federal officials are scheduled to talk about major projects at the nuclear power facility in Seneca.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is holding a public meeting on Wednesday at the Oconee Nuclear Station's World of Energy. On the agenda are discussions about ways to improve the plant to prevent or mitigate the effects of flooding and tornadoes.

The NRC has been studying the safety implications of dam failure on nuclear plants in March.

The NRC said in October the risk of flooding at Oconee was higher than had previously been thought. Officials noted that flooding estimates had increased substantially if the 385-foot high Jocassee Dam failed upstream from the plant's three reactors.

Operator Duke Energy says Oconee is safe and the utility has taken steps to reduce flood risks.
