Deputies capture suspect in sex assault of Orangeburg woman

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WCIV) - Investigators in Orangeburg County arrested a man they believe is behind the sex assault of a 20-year-old woman.

According to deputies, Dietrich Tremayne Funchess was arrested on charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and armed robbery.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said the 20-year-old victim was walking near Goff and Coleman streets in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning when a man stopped and asked her if she needed a ride.

However, the suspect, identified as Funchess, showed the girl a handgun and ordered her inside the car.

Deputies described Funchess as an extremely dangerous person.
