WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) - A man sleeping in an SUV sitting off of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard early Friday morning woke and pointed a gun at an investigating police officer's head, an incident report states.

According to the incident report, a Charleston police officer spotted an SUV parked off the road near the intersection  of Wappoo Road and Sam Rittenberg Boulevard shortly before 3 a.m. Friday and approached it because of a string of recent burglaries and car break-ins in the area.

The report states the officer found a man, later identified as 39-year-old Matthew Robinson, sleeping with a blanket over him. His hands were in his lap under the blanket, the report states.

The officer knocked twice to wake Robinson, who pulled his hands from under the blanket and pointed a pistol at the officer. The report states the officer ran for cover.

A second officer was dispatched to the area and ordered Robinson to drop the weapon and put his hands in the air. Robinson did, the report states, and he was handcuffed, arrested and charged with pointing a firearm.

When asked why he had a gun, Robinson said he did not have a gun, even though the gun was visible on the SUV's center console. The officers also noted the man appeared "grossly intoxicated."

Robinson does have a concealed weapons permit, the report states.

Robinson is also a mixed martial arts instructor with a facility located near where the officer spotted Robinson's vehicle.
