SC Public Safety internal affairs chief fired

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The internal affairs chief for the South Carolina Department of Public Safety has been fired after arguing with a state trooper during a traffic stop.

Records obtained by WIS-TV under the Freedom of Information Act show the officer pulled over Bobby Collins on Jan. 10 because he thought he was driving drunk.

The trooper's dashboard camera shows Collins refusing to cooperate with a field sobriety test and telling the trooper his actions are why the South Carolina Highway Patrol has had a bad reputation. He was not charged during the stop.

Department of Public Safety Director Leroy Smith fired Collins for his behavior during the stop. Collins has not spoken publicly about the firing.

Collins was the chief of the Office of Professional Responsibility
