CFD: Burning duplex saved by closed door despite lack of fire alarms

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Fire crews responded to an apartment fire in Charleston Sunday morning and a closed door may have saved the rest of the building.

According to Fire Marshal Mike Julazadeh, crews arrived to the scene on Cedar Street around 9:30 a.m. and found smoke coming from a second story window at the rear of the duplex.

Julazadeh said firefighters forced their way in when no one was found in the home and they ended up finding the fire in a second floor bedroom.

The fire marshal said the bedroom door was closed which contained the fire, limiting the damage to the building. Minor to moderate smoke damage was found throughout the second floor.

"After the preliminary investigation the cause is believed to be related to improper use of electrical extension cords within the bedroom," said Julazadeh. "No working smoke alarms were identified in the unit."

Units from the City of Charleston Fire Department, Saint Andrews Fire Department, North Charleston Fire Department, and Charleston County EMS responded.
