JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) – Police arrested a man early Saturday morning for impersonating an officer after he tried to make a traffic stop on James Island.
According to a Charleston police report, a woman traveling on Yale Drive said a man in a silver Crown Victoria used flashing blue and red lights to pull her over around 4 a.m. Saturday.
Police later identified the man as 32-year-old Jason Stoddard.
The woman told officers that she pulled over and watched the man she thought was an officer get out of his car and walk towards her. She saw that Stoddard wearing camouflage pants, a black pullover and an orange shirt and decided the man was not an officer, so she drove away.
She called police and described Stoddard and his car. A short time later, patrol officers spotted the car, pulled him over and searched his vehicle. Officers found an LED light bar that can be attached to a dash, a night stick, two Mag-Lite flashlights and a pair of hand cuffs.
Stoddard was arrested and charged with impersonating an officer. He is being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center.
