Beaufort doctor pleads guilty to illegal pain pill prescriptions

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - A Beaufort doctor pleaded guilty Monday in a federal courtroom in Charleston to illegally distributing prescription painkillers.

Dr. David Rhodes, 46, agreed to prescribe oxycodone to several people who did not need the medication, prosecutors said, adding that the people he knew he was provided the pills to people who were then distributing them around Beaufort.

Rhodes is facing up to 20 years in prison, a fine of $1 million and three years of probation. Rhodes also agreed to a $150,000 payment related to the street value of the drugs.

Rhodes is the 25th person charged as a result of the ongoing investigation.
