Charleston mayor declares 'Go Red for Women' day

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Charleston Mayor Joe Riley declared Tuesday "Go Red for Women Day" in Charleston as a way to draw attention to heart disease in women.

"As a survivor of a heart attack, I can tell you first hand that it can happen, and it does happen, and it's just important to do what we can to prevent it, to be aware of the signs, to go ahead and know when to call 911," said Sandye Williams, the survivor of a heart attack.

More women in South Carolina die of cardiovascular disease than the next five causes of death combined, including cancer.
