ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State, Wednesday,
announced the signing of fifteen (15) football prospects to national letters.
Only four of the signees are from South Carolina. Six are from Georgia, four
from Florida and one from North Carolina.
The four Palmetto signees included Shrine
Bowl running back Harold Atkinson of Carolina Forest High in Conway, QB Kylen
Binn of Columbia, a North-South All-Star Game selection, and LB Michael Wamer of
St. George, a High School Sports Report (HSSR) All-State performer and a Times
and Democrat newspaper Elite 11 pick, and offensive lineman Justin Evans of
Florence.
The Bulldogs were looking to strengthen
their defense and add some speed on offense, according to SC State head coach
Buddy Pough.
"We did well generally on defense and
really helped ourselves on the defensive front", Pough said. The defensive
people we signed up front are really athletic and good solid players. We got two
linebackers that are really special and a good group of defensive backs as we
were really in need of safeties and corners.
"We also signed two wide receivers that
are both skilled guys and can do a lot after catching the ball," Pough
continued. "And, we signed a tall quarterback we are excited about and a tight
end that's really athletic and hard-nosed."
Defensive end Victor Ismael of Miami,
whose dad played at SC State in the mid 80s and currently an assistant strength
coach for the Miami Hurricans, and Trayshaun Watkins of Mooresboro, NC, lead the
defensive linemen Pough spoke of.
The talented linebackers are Dayshawn
Taylor of Lincolnton, Ga., and Wamer; Kolby Gray of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and
Devondre Powell head the list of defensive backs.
Others lauded by Pough were receivers
Chris Trimmings of Brunswick, Ga., and Bernard Morrison of Stone Mountain, Ga.;
tight end Zane Fields of Jonesboro, Ga., Binn, the quarterback of Columbia and
only offensive lineman among the signees, Justin Evans of
Florence.
