Students come to Columbia for Braille Challenge

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Forty students from the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind are competing in the Braille Challenge in the state capital.

The national reading and writing contest for blind and visually impaired students begins Thursday morning at the Commission for the Blind Building.

The competition includes tests in Braille speed and accuracy, reading comprehension, proofreading, spelling, and reading tactile charts and graphs. The competition is the first step to the national challenge this summer.

Parents of the participants will take a tour of the Commission of the Blind during the competition.
