Renovated fishing pier opening on Edisto Island

EDISTO ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- It's a little easier now for fishermen to work the coastal waters in southern Charleston County.

Officials from the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission on Friday are dedicating a new fishing pier at the Steamboat public boat ramp on Edisto Island.

The new pier replaces an old wooden pier that was closed more than a year ago.

The new pier has aluminum decking, composite railings and concrete pilings. It can also accommodate anglers who are confined to wheelchairs. The pier reaches into the 22-foot-deep waters of Steamboat Creek.

The adjacent boat ramp is one of 19 in Charleston County.
