SC education panel: SC not improving fast enough

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The chairman of South Carolina's education oversight panel says innovation is crucial to improving student performance.

An annual report released Monday by the Education Oversight Committee shows South Carolina's public schools are not improving fast enough to meet the panel's 2020 goals.

Committee Chairman Neil Robinson says schools cannot continue to operate schools the same way.

He says the numbers show that students' improvement in reading proficiency is flat. He also says far too many schools get a failing grade on state report cards, and one in five students are not graduating high school within five years.

The full board will meet later Monday to consider some ideas to change the system. That includes replacing the high school exit exam and requiring elementary school teachers to earn a literacy credential.
