Goose Creek to be smoke free by July

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) - Goose Creek is going smoke free this summer.

The new law was signed by Goose Creek City Council on Jan. 8 and takes effect July, 1. It regulates smoking in public places and places of employment in the city.

Under the new law, smoking is banned in all enclosed public places with few exceptions. It applies to:

  • Restaurants and bars
  • Health care facilities
  • Bingo facilities
  • Hotel and motel lobbies
  • Public and private educational facilities
  • Retail stores and shopping malls
  • Sports arenas
  • Restrooms, lobbies, reception areas, hallways and other common-use areas
  • Lobbies, hallways and other common areas in apartment buildings, condominiums, trailer parks, retirement facilities, nursing homes and other multiple-unit residential facilities
  • Licensed childcare and adult day care facilities
  • Polling places
  • Private clubs when being used for a function to which the general public is invited
  • Rooms, chambers, places of meeting or public assembly including school buildings
  • Service lines

The ban also applies to common work areas, classrooms, meeting rooms, private offices, elevators, hallways, stairs, medical facilities, cafeterias, lounges, restrooms and vehicles used for transporting the public.

Smoking is also prohibited in certain outdoor areas when the use involves a gathering of the public. This prohibition shall apply to:

  • Amphitheaters
  • Ball parks and stadiums when in use for athletic competitions or public performances
  • Parades and special events on public streets and City property
  • Dining areas in encroachment areas on public sidewalks, plazas and parks

Smoking is also banned within 10 feet of the entrance of a building.

People who violate the ban are subject to fines up to $25. Businesses are subject to the same fines, but may also risk losing their licenses.
