HANAHAN, S.C. (WCIV) – Dec. 14 shook the nation with sadness after the events in Newtown, Conn. Now two months later, a Lowcountry woman has turned her home into a memorial -- just in time for Valentine's Day.

"When I got the news Dec. 14 what had happened, it blew my mind," said Delores Saunders. "Right then and there I contemplated on something I could do for their parents."

Saunders says she spent a week blowing up balloon hearts and hanging them with lights in her front yard.

"To me, it symbolizes a way to express my love and my grief that I'm going through as well," said Saunders.

Saunders is a mother of five and has nine grandkids and three great-grands. She says she "cried enough tears to fill an ocean" when she heard about the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

"That's why I put so many hearts everywhere and put their names and the date it happened and the age," she said.

In Saunders' yard, every child and adult killed in that Newtown, Conn., shooting has a heart in their honor.

"I would give anything to meet all of those parents, to embrace them and just give them the biggest hug and let them know how I feel and how my heart and my whole family's heart aches for them," Saunders said.

Saunders says the Valentine's Day tribute was a symbol of love for the Sandy Hook victims' families and also a project to help her heal.

"I told my husband I have such a good feeling," Saunders said. "I said, 'It's almost as though those little ones are looking down and they can see what I'm doing for them.'"

Saunders says she plans to honor the Sandy Hook victims every year around Valentine's Day.
