Former SC municipal judge gets 2 years in prison

Posted: Updated:

ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) - A former municipal judge in the Pickens County town of Central has been sentenced to two years in prison for filing false income tax returns.

Forty-8-year-old Janet H. Reese was also ordered to pay $472,000 in restitution.

U. S. Attorney Bill Nettles says Reese pleaded guilty in September.

Reese ran her own tax preparation business. Prosecutors say she prepared and filed multiple tax returns for clients for the 2008 tax year, claiming a tax credit for first time homebuyers. Nettles says the clients had not bought homes, and Reese had the refunds deposited in an account that she controlled.

Authorities estimate that Reese filed nearly $500,000 in improper refunds.
