CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Charleston Mayor Joe Riley announced Thursday his support for the Democratic candidate in the 1st District Congressional race.
"I'm here to proudly, enthusiastically endorse Elizabeth Colbert-Busch to be our next Congressperson and our Congresswoman from this area of South Carolina," he said from downtown Charleston.
This is Colbert-Busch's second endorsement so far.
She said she will strive to live up to Riley's legacy.
"Mayor Riley knows who we are, he knows where we can go, and he knows what we'll be. He's a visionary. I want to follow his lead; I want to be like Mayor Riley," Colbert-Busch said.
She also has a celebrity in her corner. Her brother, famed comedian and pundit Stephen Colbert, announced Thursday he was holding a fundraiser for Colbert-Busch at The Alley on Feb. 23.
A private reception starts at 3 p.m. followed by a general reception from 4-6 p.m. There will also be bowling. Tickets for the general reception are $250.
He and Colbert-Busch will also host a dinner at a private residence on the same night.
The primary is scheduled for March 19.
