MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) - The Veterinary Specialty Care in Mount Pleasant is taking in donations to help care for 45 dogs taken from a home in Berkeley County on Monday.
The remains of more than 200 dogs were found at the home of Loney Garrett. He faces dozens of animal cruelty charges.
Charleston Animal Society CEO Joe Elmore said Friday that South Carolina laws create a gray area between misdemeanor and felony when it comes to animal cruelty offenses.
He hopes new legislation will change that.
"What it's going to do is help law enforcement agencies prosecute and enforce the laws because they'll be stronger laws. The laws will be more clear. and it will also help animal shelters when animals are seized but there isn't a funding mechanism for the care of those animals over a long period of time," he said.
Garrett has been released from jail after he posted bond earlier this week.
If you'd like to donate to help with the cost of the rescued dogs' medical bills, checks are accepted at the Mount Pleasant Emergency Vet Clinic (which shares the facility with Veterinary Specialty Care). Simply write 'ARR' in the memo space.
The ARR website also accepts donations which can be made by mail or through Paypal plus the ARR Facebook pagewill have a wish list of items needed.
