Pee Dee transit authority is running out of money

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - The director of the Pee Dee Regional Transit Authority says if more money for the service doesn't surface soon, the state's oldest transportation authority may have to shut down.

The authority's executive director, Chuck MacNeil, told the Morning News of Florence that the authority has eliminated routes, increased fares, reduced benefits and cut staff in an effort to save money.

MacNeil says earlier this month, the authority stopped taking contracts for transportation for Medicaid and social service agencies, which were both its biggest source of revenue and the biggest expense.

The authority's current budget is nearly $6.2 million, down 16% from the year before. The authority operates with a $500,000 budget deficit as it serves about 250,000 riders annually.
