SCHP interviewing 'person of interest' following death of coach

Posted: Updated:

KINGSTREE, S.C. (WCIV) -- State Highway Patrol officials released more details and photos of people of interest in a fatal accident in Williamsburg County that killed a local girls' basketball coach.

Troopers said the vehicle involved in the crash that led to the death of Sonya Burgess is a light-colored Chevy Impala.

The Kingstree High School girls basketball team was supposed to be preparing for a key playoff matchup Tuesday. Instead, the team and the high school are dealing with tragedy.

The Williamsburg County Coroner told WPDE-TV that Burgess was killed in a hit-and-run crash Monday night.

The S.C. Highway Patrol says the crash happened at 6:32 p.m. on U.S. Highway 52 in Williamsburg County. Officials said Burgess was driving a 1999 Ford SUV when she swerved to avoid another vehicle that was approaching in the wrong lane.

Officials said Burgess overcorrected, which caused the Ford Expedition to overturn.

The Highway Patrol says Burgess was out of the vehicle when she stepped into the roadway and was hit by another oncoming vehicle. Officials say the 39-year-old basketball coach and Kingstree High School science department chair died at the scene.

Three minors were in the SUV during the crash. They were taken to Williamsburg Regional Hospital. Their conditions have not been released.

Officials say the other two vehicles involved in the crash left the scene. The S.C. Highway Patrol MAIT team is handling the investigation.

The Kingstree High School girls basketball team just won a 2A state quarterfinals game on Friday. They play at Lake City on Tuesday.
