MCAS Beaufort helps student live his dream

Posted: Updated:

BEAUFORT, S.C. (WCIV) - Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort helped a Bluffton High School senior experience his dream before it becomes impossible.

Eighteen-year-old Charlie Bowers got a tour of MCAS Beaufort on Feb. 15, which was a surprise his mother set up.

"We have today off from school," said Charlie Bowers. "My mom told me yesterday that we have to be up early. I asked what we were doing, and she said don't worry about it, it's a surprise. I had no idea what it was."

Rebecca Bowers, Charlie Bowers' younger sister, knew about the surprise two days before and said she had a hard time keeping it a secret.

"He's my brother, and I tell him everything anyways," she said.

Charlie Bowers has a degenerative disease called Stargardt's disease, which is causing him to slowly go blind by destroying the part of the eye called the macula.
